To make Sooji Upma, you will need the following ingredients:- 1 cup of Sooji or Semolina
- 2 cups of Water
- 1 Onion, finely chopped
- 1 Tomato, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup of Green Peas
- 2 Green Chillies, finely chopped
- 1 tsp of Ginger, grated
- 1/2 tsp of Mustard Seeds
- 1/2 tsp of Cumin Seeds
- 1/2 tsp of Urad Dal
- 1/2 tsp of Chana Dal
- A pinch of Hing or Asafoetida
- A few Curry Leaves
- 2 tbsp of Oil
- Salt to taste
- Coriander Leaves, chopped (for garnishing)
Instructions
Now that we have all the ingredients, let's start with the recipe:- Heat a pan on medium flame and add 1 cup of sooji to it. Roast the sooji until it turns golden brown and starts to release a nutty aroma. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Keep stirring continuously to prevent burning.
- Once done, transfer the roasted sooji to a plate and keep it aside.
- In the same pan, heat 2 tbsp of oil on medium flame. Add 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp of urad dal, and 1/2 tsp of chana dal. Sauté until the dals turn golden brown.
- Next, add a pinch of hing or asafoetida, a few curry leaves, 1 tsp of grated ginger, and 2 finely chopped green chillies. Sauté for a few seconds until the ginger and chillies are fragrant.
- Add 1 finely chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent.
- Now, add 1 finely chopped tomato and 1/2 cup of green peas. Sauté until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
- Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Mix well and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once the water starts boiling, reduce the flame to low and add the roasted sooji slowly while stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
- Mix well until the water is absorbed and the sooji is cooked through. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
- Turn off the flame and cover the pan for a minute to allow the sooji to absorb any remaining moisture.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with chutney or sambar.
