Introduction

Spaghetti and rice are two of the most popular and versatile foods in the world. They are easy to prepare, affordable, and can be customized with a variety of ingredients to suit your taste. Combining spaghetti and rice in one dish may sound unusual, but it’s actually a delicious and filling meal that can be enjoyed on its own or as a side dish.

Ingredients

To make spaghetti and rice, you will need:
  • 1 cup of uncooked rice
  • 1 pound of spaghetti
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon of dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 4 cups of water

Optional Ingredients

You can also add any of the following ingredients to your spaghetti and rice dish, depending on your preference:
  • Ground beef or turkey
  • Crushed red pepper flakes
  • Chopped bell peppers
  • Shredded cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

1. Rinse the rice in a fine mesh strainer under cold running water until the water runs clear. Drain well and set aside.
2. Break the spaghetti into thirds and set aside.
3. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until the onion is translucent.
4. Add the can of diced tomatoes (undrained) to the pot, along with the dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and let simmer for 5 minutes.
5. Add the rice to the pot and stir well. Add the 4 cups of water and bring to a boil.
6. Once the water is boiling, add the spaghetti to the pot and stir well. Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid.
7. Let the spaghetti and rice simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the spaghetti is tender.
8. Once the spaghetti and rice are cooked, remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5-10 minutes to absorb any remaining liquid.
9. Fluff the spaghetti and rice with a fork and serve hot. Optional toppings include shredded cheese, chopped fresh parsley, and crushed red pepper flakes.
