Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp sambar powder
  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

The following are the instructions to make sambar:
  1. Wash the toor dal and pressure cook it with 2 cups of water for 3-4 whistles.
  2. Once the pressure has released, mash the dal well and keep it aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, dried red chillies, and curry leaves.
  4. When the mustard seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté until they turn soft and mushy.
  6. Add the chopped vegetables and sauté for a few minutes.
  7. Add turmeric powder, sambar powder, and salt to taste.
  8. Add 2 cups of water and mix well.
  9. Cover the pan and let the vegetables cook on medium flame until they are soft and tender.
  10. Add the tamarind paste and mix well.
  11. Add the mashed dal and mix well.
  12. Let the sambar simmer on low flame for 10-15 minutes.
  13. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or idli.
