- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
Instructions
Follow these steps to make the Danish pastry dough:- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Add the egg to the milk mixture and beat well.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a rough dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for 5-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough back into the bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until it has doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the softened butter over the top two-thirds of the dough.
- Fold the bottom third of the dough up and over the butter, then fold the top third down over the middle.
- Turn the dough 90 degrees and roll it out again into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Repeat the butter-folding process and then cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, roll out the dough again into a rectangle and repeat the butter-folding process one more time.
- Cover the dough and refrigerate for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
- Roll out the dough one more time into a rectangle and cut it into triangles.
- Place your filling of choice onto the wide end of each triangle and roll it up towards the point.
- Place the pastries onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until the pastries are golden brown.
- Allow the pastries to cool for a few minutes before serving.
