Making custard buns at home may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually quite easy. In this article, we will walk you through the steps to make delicious custard buns at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

Making the Dough

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well. 2. Add warm water and mix until a dough forms. 3. Add softened butter and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. 4. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise for 1 hour in a warm place.

Making the Custard Filling

1. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together egg yolks and cornstarch until smooth. 2. In a saucepan, heat whole milk, sugar, and salt over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. 3. Slowly pour the milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly. 4. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and heat over medium heat, whisking constantly until it thickens. 5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and heavy cream. 6. Transfer the custard to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until chilled.

Assembling the Buns

1. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll them into balls. 2. Flatten each ball with your palm, then use a rolling pin to roll it out into a 4-inch circle. 3. Place 1 tablespoon of custard filling in the center of each circle. 4. Pinch the edges of the circle together to seal the filling inside. 5. Place each bun on a small piece of parchment paper and let them rise for 15 minutes. 6. Steam the buns for 15 minutes over high heat.
