Jamaican Patty Recipe
Introduction

For the pastry:- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp allspice
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 2 tbsp breadcrumbs
Instructions
Pastry
1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and turmeric powder. 2. Cut in the vegetable shortening until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. 3. Gradually add the cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. 4. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it is smooth and elastic. 5. Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions and shape into balls. 6. Cover the dough balls with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.Filling
1. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. 2. Add the chopped onion and garlic and cook until softened. 3. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking up any clumps with a wooden spoon. 4. Add the thyme, paprika, allspice, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine. 5. Add the beef broth and breadcrumbs and stir until the mixture is thick and saucy. 6. Remove from heat and let cool.Assembly
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. 2. Remove the dough balls from the refrigerator and roll each one out into a thin circle. 3. Spoon the filling onto one half of the circle, leaving a border around the edge. 4. Fold the other half of the circle over the filling and crimp the edges together with a fork. 5. Repeat with the remaining dough balls and filling. 6. Place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. 7.
