Caramel Slice Recipe
Introduction
Caramel slice is a classic Australian dessert that is loved all around the world. For the shortbread base:- 1 1/2 cups of plain flour
- 1/2 cup of caster sugar
- 125g of unsalted butter, softened
- 395g can of sweetened condensed milk
- 2 tablespoons of golden syrup
- 60g of unsalted butter
- 200g of good quality dark chocolate
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line a square 20cm (8 inch) baking pan with baking paper. Step 2: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, caster sugar, and softened butter. Use your hands to mix the ingredients until they resemble breadcrumbs. Step 3: Press the mixture into the prepared baking pan and use a fork to prick the surface. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the base is golden brown. Step 4: While the base is baking, prepare the caramel filling. In a saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk, golden syrup, and butter. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and turns a caramel color. Step 5: Pour the caramel over the baked base and smooth it out with a spatula. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the caramel is bubbling and golden. Step 6: Remove the slice from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Step 7: Melt the dark chocolate and vegetable oil in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir until smooth and shiny. Step 8: Pour the melted chocolate over the cooled caramel slice and spread it out evenly. Let the chocolate set before cutting the slice into squares and serving.Nutrition
